Tantalum is malleable and can be drawn into thin wire foil. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is very small. Each increase of one degree Celsius only expands by 6.6 parts per million. In addition, its toughness is very strong, even better than copper.

High purity tantalum can be used as a solid electrolytic capacitor with large capacity, small volume, and stable performance, used in radar, missiles, supersonic aircraft, and electronic computers. It can also be used to manufacture tanks, towers, pipelines, and valves for petrochemical heat exchangers, heaters, concentrators, and reactors. Tantalum can also be used as a component material for electronic emission tubes and high-power electronic tubes. Tantalum alloy can be used as a combustion chamber for supersonic aircraft and as a heat resistant and high-strength material. Tantalum tungsten alloy can be used as a missile nozzle.
